CLIPS FROM 'MEDUSA SINGS THE BLUES' SEPTEMBER 2005 PHILLY FRINGE video by Maria Kydonieus
Medusa's Bio
Medusa started her career as a model. Her face has been used on countless flags, coins, vases and the like for centuries. Most recently a movie production company and a computer software company have asked her for the rights to use her image. Originally from Greece, Medusa always had a calling for the stage. From 1400's to the 1600's she was seen throughout Europe with various traveling Opera and Theatre companies. She was known mostly for her roles as Carmen, Medea and Lady Macbeth, though very few people ever actually saw her perform. She often had differences of opinions with her directors. She started a great many sculpture museums in the early part of her acting career and helped to bring the Renaissance to Italy, France and Germany. Convinced that she would be more accepted in America, she made her way to the states with a gypsy freak show in the late 1800's. Up until the the early 1900's she was seen in every carnival, circus, side show and road side attraction from Idaho to Georgia. She got her first big film break with the famous movie FREAKS in the 1930's and had extra roles in such classics as Nosferatu, Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Night of the Living Dead. She also worked behind the scenes for the Rocky Horror Picture Show(remember the 'Medusa' lever? That was all her)
She was first turned on to the blues at The Snake Pit Blues Bar in Memphis, TN. She began singing the Blues circuit and later opened a jazz club/speakeasy here in Philadelphia in the 1920's. In the 1950's she toured as a back up vocalist for the late Ray Charles. In 1971 Medusa made her way to England and landed a gig as the original front girl for the punk band, The Plasmatics. She left the band because of artistic differences and was replaced by Wendy O. Williams. She was also a studio singer for Stevie Wonder.
About three years ago, Medusa come back to the states and ran into her long time friend Orpheus and together the started touring her one woman show, Medusa Sings the Blues in such venues as The Taj Majal, Atlantic City; CBGC's, NY City; Warm Daddy's, The Blue Noteand her namesake Medusa Loungehere in Philadelphia to name a few.
Soon up: The Blue's Scale; Medusa's World Tour. She and Orpheus are also in negotiation with their homeland right now for Welcome Home performance at the Acropolis slotted for late fall 2007.
